Our Story

FROM THE BEGINNING

About two and a half years ago we opened our boutique butchery in Stellenbosch. We were given this opportunity by our brother Fritz Schoon, renowned artisanal baker who was expanding his shop into an organic one stop market: Schoon de Companje. And what is a market without meat? But not just any meat. Locally sourced, natural meat. We were focused on all aspects of the production of the meat that we bought. Farmers who understand the impact of animal welfare on meat quality. Stress-free rearing. Only the best meat would do for us and our clients.

After a couple of months we decided to start weekly braai nights, using only the best ingredients, of which our meat, of course was the main feature. The response from the public far exceeded our expectations and we realized once again how much South Africans appreciate a good braai with exceptional meat! So we decided to spread the love and move to Jhb, where we joined my sister Dany and the rest of the team in her amazing business Down to Earth Farm Feasts.

With every feast we realised how strong the desire here in Jhb is for good food and good wine, to be served in beautiful settings and we decided to grab the opportunity, by opening our own venue. This of course could not be done without the artistic hand and creative eye of our mother, Jenny Schoon.

If you have had the opportunity to step through the doors of our brother’s bakery in Stellensbosch, Schoon, you could not have left without experiencing the essence of what our mother created in that space. Every piece of furniture, carefully chosen, every seating arrangement made with only the visitor’s comfort and relaxation in mind. The bakery has been described by a few as entering another world, slowing down and going back to days gone by, where people made time to relax, and connect with each other. This is the gift our mother has. So when she agreed to come on board, we knew this was going to be a special place.

So after a couple of months of hard work, lots of wine drinking, for inspiration of course, and many coats of paint, we are so excited to open the doors to Nice to Meat You, where we believe my mother has created, with a little bit of help from us, a space where you can stop, breathe, relax and realise there’s more to life. Of course there’s no better way to do this than with good company, good wine and excellent food, and our mother’s cooking abilities match her creativity, so you know you’re in for a treat. With her Greek heritiage, feeding people comes naturally to her and we’re happy to say the gene has been passed down to all of us.
We invite you to enjoy our beautiful setting and our delicious food, made with love!
